What to send us

A photo of the nameplate speeds up quoting. On Baldor motors, the catalog number and spec number identify the exact design. Include the horsepower, voltage and frame size if the nameplate is damaged, a short description of the failure, and how quickly you need the motor back.

03 / How it works

Our Baldor repair process

Step 01

Incoming inspection

We record the nameplate data and the motor’s condition when it arrives.

Step 02

Testing

Ground testing, surge comparison and core loss testing identify winding and core problems.

Step 03

Teardown and failure analysis

We inspect bearings, shaft, rotor, stator and housings to find the cause of failure, not just the symptom.

Step 04

Written quote

You receive a repair quote, and a replacement quote when a new motor makes more sense.

Step 05

Repair

Rewinding, bearing replacement, shaft and housing machining, and brake work as required.

Step 06

Balancing and final testing

before the motor is returned.

Common Reasons Baldor Motors Come In

01Bearing failure from contamination, misalignment or lubrication problems
02Winding insulation breakdown from heat, moisture or voltage spikes
03Overheating from overload, blocked ventilation or single phasing
04Water intrusion on washdown motors
05Commutator and brush wear on DC motors
06Worn or failed brakes on brake motors

For more detail, see our article on the top causes of electric motor failure.

05 / Repair or replace

Need a new Baldor unit instead?

We sell new and surplus motors, gearboxes and drives too. Call with the nameplate and we will quote a matched replacement alongside the repair, so you can compare and decide.

06 / FAQ

Straight answers on Baldor

Q1What on a Baldor nameplate do you actually need?

The catalog number and the spec number. The spec number pins down the exact design, including options the catalog number does not show. A clear photo of the whole nameplate is best.

Q2Is a dead Baldor worth repairing, or should we just buy new?

Small stock Baldor general purpose motors are often cheaper to replace. DC motors, larger frames, washdown and brake motors are usually worth repairing, especially when a new one is not on the shelf. We will quote both so you can compare.

Q3Our motors keep failing. Can you tell us why?

Usually the motor is pointing at something upstream. The most common culprits are incoming power problems, like voltage imbalance, spikes and drive-related shaft currents, and a harsh environment: heat, moisture, dust and washdown chemicals. Misalignment and bearing trouble round out the list. We tear every motor down, find what actually took it out, and tell you, so the replacement does not go the same way.

Q4Is a rewound motor as good as a new one?

In a lot of cases it is better. We rewind with Grade H magnet wire, a higher temperature rating than most shops use, and seal the windings with Elantas varnish. Plenty of our motors leave the shop in better shape than when they left the factory.
