07 / FAQ

Straight answers on Boston Gear

Q1Can you match the ratio and mounting exactly?

Yes. Send the catalog number from the reducer nameplate and we will rebuild it to the same ratio and mounting, or quote an exact replacement.

Q2Is a small worm reducer worth rebuilding?

Small, common reducers are often cheaper to replace, and we will tell you that. Larger units and hard-to-get configurations are usually worth rebuilding.

Q3Why is our reducer running hot or leaking?

Usually worn seals, low or wrong oil, overload or a worn worm gear set. We find the cause at teardown so the rebuild lasts.

Q4Our motors keep failing. Can you tell us why?

Usually the motor is pointing at something upstream. The most common culprits are incoming power problems, like voltage imbalance, spikes and drive-related shaft currents, and a harsh environment: heat, moisture, dust and washdown chemicals. Misalignment and bearing trouble round out the list. We tear every motor down, find what actually took it out, and tell you, so the replacement does not go the same way.
