Siemens Motor Repair

A Plus Electric Motor Repair, Inc. repairs and rewinds Siemens industrial motors at our shop in St. Charles, Illinois. Siemens motors are often paired with variable frequency drives, so we look at the motor and the drive together when diagnosing a failure. We serve customers throughout northern Illinois, northwest Indiana and southern Wisconsin.

What to send us

Send a photo of the nameplate showing the order number and serial number. Include the horsepower, voltage and frame size if the nameplate is damaged, whether the motor runs on a VFD, a short description of the failure, and how quickly you need it back.

02 / Good to know

Motors on Variable Frequency Drives

VFDs can push currents through motor bearings and put voltage stress on windings. Repeat bearing failures on a drive-fed motor often point to grounding or drive setup rather than the motor itself. When we find that pattern, we will tell you, and our on-site team can check drive parameters and grounding at your facility. See our guide to VFD troubleshooting, grounding and noise.

Free pickup

We come get it

Free pickup and delivery within 50 miles of our St. Charles shop, with pickup or freight from farther out.

In house

Nothing gets sent out

Winding, testing, dynamic balancing and machining all happen in our own shop. We rewind with Grade H magnet wire and Elantas varnish, a step above what most shops use.

Turnaround

7–10 days, or 3–5 rush

Time-critical jobs are worked through nights and weekends when a line is down.

04 / How it works

Our Siemens repair process

Step 01

Incoming inspection

We record the nameplate data and the motor’s condition when it arrives.

Step 02

Testing

Ground testing, surge comparison and core loss testing identify winding and core problems.

Step 03

Teardown and failure analysis

of bearings, shaft, rotor, stator and housings, including checks for drive-related bearing damage.

Step 04

Written quote

for repair, or for replacement when that makes more sense.

Step 05

Repair

Rewinding, bearing replacement and shaft and housing machining as required.

Step 06

Balancing and final testing

before the motor is returned.

05 / Failure modes

Common Reasons Siemens Motors Come In

01Bearing damage from shaft currents on VFD-driven motors
02Bearing failure from contamination, misalignment or lubrication problems
03Winding insulation breakdown from heat, moisture or voltage spikes
04Overheating from overload or blocked ventilation
05Encoder or feedback faults on servo motors
06 / Repair or replace

Need a new Siemens unit instead?

We sell new and surplus motors, gearboxes and drives too. Call with the nameplate and we will quote a matched replacement alongside the repair, so you can compare and decide.

07 / FAQ

Straight answers on Siemens

Q1Why do our Siemens motors on VFDs keep losing bearings?

Usually shaft currents from the drive discharging through the bearings, which leaves a washboard pattern called fluting. We can confirm it at teardown and recommend fixes like a shaft grounding ring or an insulated bearing so it stops happening.

Q2What do you need from a Siemens nameplate?

The order number (Siemens calls it the MLFB), plus horsepower or kW, voltage and frame. A clear photo of the full nameplate is best.

Q3How do you decide between repair and replacement?

It mostly comes down to two numbers: what the repair costs and how long a new one takes to arrive. Sometimes the repair costs more than a new motor, but if the OEM is quoting four to five weeks, repair still gets your line running sooner. We lay out both options with real prices and lead times so you can make the call. Call (630) 283-3569 and we will quote it.

Q4Is a rewound motor as good as a new one?

In a lot of cases it is better. We rewind with Grade H magnet wire, a higher temperature rating than most shops use, and seal the windings with Elantas varnish. Plenty of our motors leave the shop in better shape than when they left the factory.
