Quote checklist

What to send us

A photo of the nameplate speeds up quoting. On GE motors, the model number and type identify the design. Include horsepower, voltage, frame and enclosure if the nameplate is damaged, a short description of the failure, and how quickly you need the motor back.

02 / Good to know

Where GE Motors Went

GE no longer makes most of the motors that carry its name. GE sold its commercial and HVAC motor business to Regal Beloit in 2004, and in 2018 it sold its small industrial motors business to Wolong Electric Group. Large numbers of GE motors remain in service, and parts and wiring data for older designs can be hard to find. That is where a repair shop with deep experience matters.

04 / How it works

Our GE repair process

Step 01

Incoming inspection

We record the nameplate data and the motor’s condition when it arrives.

Step 02

Testing

Ground testing, surge comparison and core loss testing identify winding and core problems.

Step 03

Teardown and failure analysis

We inspect bearings, shaft, rotor, stator and housings to find the cause of failure, not just the symptom.

Step 04

Written quote

You receive a repair quote, and a replacement quote when a new GE motor or equivalent makes more sense.

Step 05

Repair

Rewinding, bearing replacement, shaft and housing machining, and brake work as required.

Step 06

Balancing and final testing

before the motor is returned.

05 / Failure modes

06 / Repair or replace

Need a new GE unit instead?

We sell new and surplus motors, gearboxes and drives too. Call with the nameplate and we will quote a matched replacement alongside the repair, so you can compare and decide.

07 / FAQ

Straight answers on GE

Q1Our GE motor is obsolete. Now what?

Repair it. We keep winding data on more than 4,000 motors and can rewind and rebuild GE motors that are no longer made, or modify a current motor to fit your mounting.

Q2Who makes GE motors now?

GE sold its commercial motor business to Regal Beloit in 2004 and its small industrial motor business to Wolong in 2018. Many GE motors are still running, which is why repair is often the practical choice.

Q3Can you still rebuild old GE DC motors?

Yes. We rewind armatures and fields, turn and undercut commutators and rebuild brush rigging on GE DC motors.

Q4Is a rewound motor as good as a new one?

In a lot of cases it is better. We rewind with Grade H magnet wire, a higher temperature rating than most shops use, and seal the windings with Elantas varnish. Plenty of our motors leave the shop in better shape than when they left the factory.
