07 / FAQ

Straight answers on Leeson

Q1Is a small Leeson motor worth repairing?

Often it is cheaper to replace a small Leeson general purpose motor than to rewind it, and we will tell you that. DC motors, washdown motors, gearmotors and larger frames are usually worth repairing.

Q2Can you match a replacement for a Leeson washdown motor?

Yes. We match enclosure, IP rating, mounting, shaft and voltage so the replacement drops in. Call (630) 283-3569 and we will quote it.

Q3Our motors keep failing. Can you tell us why?

Usually the motor is pointing at something upstream. The most common culprits are incoming power problems, like voltage imbalance, spikes and drive-related shaft currents, and a harsh environment: heat, moisture, dust and washdown chemicals. Misalignment and bearing trouble round out the list. We tear every motor down, find what actually took it out, and tell you, so the replacement does not go the same way.

Q4Should we keep spare motors on the shelf?

For any line you cannot afford to have down, yes. Some OEMs build special motors that only they sell, and those can take weeks to get. Others are standard Baldor or WEG motors we can often have in your hands within a couple of hours. Knowing which is which before something fails is the point, and we can help you sort through it.
